Deferred Admissions and Reimbursement Tool

HOW MANY POTENTIAL ADMISSIONS ARE WE DEFERRING BECAUSE OF HAIS?

This tool estimates how many additional patients could potentially be admitted for various procedures and the potential reimbursement based on a reduction in the number of extra days that beds are filled by healthcare-associated infection (HAI) patients.

Select your HAI of interest

Provide the number of HAI events identified during the surveillance period of interest.

Provide the surveillance period during which the HAI events above were identified (e.g., 1 year, 3 quarters, 2 months).

Provide an estimated percent reduction for that HAI

Select up to three procedures of interest that could be performed if beds were not being used for extra days by patients with the HAI of interest

Provide your name to use in the full report

Provide the name of your facility to use in the full report

Please fill out all form fields

Instructions:

  • Select your HAI of interest,
  • Provide the number of times that HAI was identified and during what time period those occurred (e.g., 1 year),
  • Provide an estimated percent reduction for that HAI, and
  • Select a procedure (or procedures) of interest that could be performed if beds were not being used for extra days by patients with the HAI of interest.

Reducing the number of CLABSI by 30% could avoid 150 excess patient days over a 3 month period, potentially providing beds for up to 20 Pacemaker Insertion procedures, worth $123,456

How can a CLABSI reduction be achieved?

This tool provides an estimate of the cost of implementing a specific intervention based on the cost of the current practice, the cost of the new practice, and how often the event of interest is occurring in your facility (e.g., how often a specific product is used). Combined with outputs from the Deferred Admissions and Reimbursement Tool, this tool will emphasize the expected benefit of the intervention.

Provide an name for the proposed Intervention

Indicate how frequently the intervention event occurs.

Indicate how many times the intervention event occurs per patient/device/etc.

Provide the costs of the current practice (if any)

Provide the costs of the proposed intervention

Provide one-time cost amount unrelated to the denominator, if applicable (e.g. one-time training cost, one-time purchase of a piece of equipment)

Instructions:

To add ICC results to the DART output, you will need to:

  • Provide a name for the proposed intervention,
  • Indicate how frequently the intervention event occurs (e.g. once per patient, multiple times per device-day),
    • If the intervention event occurs multiple times per patient/device/etc., provide an estimate of how often (e.g., 8 times per device-day),
  • Provide an applicable denominator (e.g., number of device-days) for the time period you indicated in the DART,
  • Provide the costs of the applicable current practice (if any) and the proposed intervention event, and
  • Provide a one-time cost amount unrelated to the denominator, if applicable (e.g. one-time training cost, one-time purchase of a piece of equipment).

This intervention would cost approximately $100 more than your current practice for a 2 month period. A 13% reduction in CLABSI could free up the patient days to potentially cover this cost through additional procedures.
