Intervention Cost Calculator

How much will it cost to implement our infection prevention intervention?

This tool provides an estimate of the cost of implementing a specific intervention based on the cost of the current practice, the cost of the new practice, and how often the event of interest is occurring in your facility (e.g., how often a specific product is used). This output can be combined with outputs from the Mortality Attributed Tool and the Deferred Admissions and Reimbursement Tool on this site to emphasize the expected benefit of the intervention.

Provide a name for the proposed intervention.

Select your HAI of interest.

Use your facility’s cost or enter an estimate, such as those available here.

Provide the number of HAI events identified during the surveillance period of interest.

Provide the surveillance period during which the HAI events above were identified (e.g., 1 year, 3 quarters, 2 months).

Provide an estimated percent reduction for that HAI.

Indicate how many times the intervention event occurs per patient/device/etc.

If the steps occur multiple times per patient/device/etc., indicate how many times.

Provide the costs of the current practice (if any).

Provide the costs of the proposed intervention.

Provide a one-time cost amount unrelated to the denominator, if applicable (e.g. one-time training cost, one-time purchase of a piece of equipment).

Provide your name to use in the full report.

Provide the name of your facility to use in the full report.

Instructions:

  • Provide a name for the proposed intervention,
  • Select your healthcare-associated infection (HAI) of interest and provide:
    • an attributable cost for that HAI,
    • the number of times that HAI was identified and during what time period those occurred (e.g., 1 year), and
    • a percent reduction target for that HAI,
  • Indicate how frequently the intervention event occurs (e.g., once per patient, multiple times per device-day),
  • If the intervention event occurs multiple times per patient/device/etc., indicate how many times,
  • Provide an applicable denominator for the time period you provided in the Deferred Admissions and Reimbursement Tool (e.g., number of patients, number of device-days),
  • Provide the costs of the current practice (if any) and the proposed intervention, and
  • Provide a one-time cost amount unrelated to the denominator, if applicable (e.g., one-time training cost, one-time purchase of a piece of equipment).

This intervention would cost approximately $25,000 more than your current practice.

Reducing your events by % could potentially save your facility over a period.

An HAI reduction of % would potentially allow the HAI-related savings to offset the cost of this intervention.
